You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. Even though you can apply in person and by phone, online applications are the most convenient option. To apply, you will just need information about:
- You and your family members.
- Your medical condition.
- Your work history.
When you apply online through the Social Security Administration, you do not need to wait for an appointment. You are also able to save your application and come back to it later.
The application is simple and will let you know what kind of documents you need to provide. However, if you’d like additional help, a disability lawyer can guide you and handle your claim.
If your application is approved, then your family may also receive SSDI payments. Social Security Disability benefits for dependents and spouses are usually about 50% of the amount you’ll receive from SSDI. The application decision notice you get in the mail will tell you everything you need to know about who qualifies for SSDI payments in your family.
